Corsair Cove

Corsair Cove cohesion explained: what it is, what breaks it, and how to fix it

Cohesion is the only thing keeping your pirates working for you. It is a colony-wide morale stat — separate from the happiness of any individual camp — and it is the closest thing Corsair Cove has to a fail state: if cohesion hits zero, the run is over.

That makes it different from the resource bars around it. Running out of food is a problem you can dig out of. Running out of cohesion is not.

What cohesion actually governs#

Two things, and the second is the one people miss.

1. Whether your crew keeps working. Below the mutiny threshold, pirates stop working, steal resources from your stockpiles and actively damage buildings. That is a downward spiral: the sabotage reduces your ability to produce the rum and food that would have fixed the cohesion.

2. How much risk you can absorb. High cohesion buys you the freedom to be reckless — to take the harsh option with a drifter who washes up, or to handle a disease outbreak the cheap way instead of the expensive way. Low cohesion means every crisis lands harder, and it means Amara's return hits a crew that is already fragile.

That second point is the strategic core of the game. Cohesion is not a bar to keep topped up for its own sake; it is a buffer you spend on decisions. Players who keep it pinned near maximum and never spend it are leaving options on the table. Players who let it drift down to "fine" discover they have no room to manoeuvre when something goes wrong.

What raises cohesion#

Rum, first and always. A full rum supply is the highest-leverage cohesion input in the game. Get a reliable rum chain running before you get a pretty one.

Taverns, upgraded and well-placed. Upgrading taverns raises cohesion, and placement matters: crew quarters sitting outside tavern coverage is a common and expensive early mistake. Build the tavern where people already live rather than where the waterfront looks nice.

Food that is actually good. Keeping the crew fed on stew rather than the bare minimum is a morale input, not just a survival one.

Adequate shelter. Housing shortfalls drag cohesion down continuously — it is a slow leak rather than a sudden drop, which is exactly why it goes unnoticed.

Distributing plunder after a raid. Hand out loot when the crew returns from a successful expedition. This is an immediate, active boost rather than a passive drip, and it is easy to forget in the rush to sort your new cargo.

The Gibbet. Imprisoning a drifter in a cell restores +5 cohesion — the game's explicitly cynical option, blaming your problems on an outsider. It is a real tool for pulling back from the mutiny threshold, and it is meant to feel bad.

Favourable story-event choices. Event decisions move cohesion in both directions. When you are already low, take the safe option even when the risky one pays better.

What drains cohesion#

Recovering a crew on the edge#

If you are already in mutiny territory, order matters — you do not have time to do everything.

  1. Stop the bleeding first. Pause or cancel expeditions. Another defeat while you are at 20% is how runs end.
  2. Dump everything into rum and food. Not construction, not tech. Consumables the crew actually receive.
  3. Use the Gibbet if you have one. +5 is not huge, but it can be the difference between above and below the mutiny line while your other fixes take effect.
  4. Distribute any plunder you are holding. Held cargo is doing nothing for you; handed out it is an immediate boost.
  5. Stop accepting new arrivals until the bar recovers. More mouths at 20% cohesion makes it worse, not better.
  6. Then fix the layout — tavern coverage and housing — so it does not happen again.

Save before decisions, not after#

Corsair Cove's cohesion swings hardest on story events and expedition outcomes, both of which are one-click commitments. Manual-save with a distinct name before:

Builder saves are small. An hour of unpicking a cohesion collapse is not.

FAQ#

What happens if cohesion hits zero in Corsair Cove?#

The run ends. Before that, from roughly 25% downward, you get active mutinies — crew stop working, steal from your stockpiles and sabotage buildings, which makes recovery progressively harder the longer you leave it.

What is the fastest way to raise cohesion?#

Rum and distributed plunder, because both act immediately. Tavern upgrades, better food and housing all work but take time to show. If you are in crisis, prioritise the instant levers and fix the structural ones afterwards.

Is cohesion the same as camp happiness?#

No. Cohesion is a single settlement-wide morale figure; individual camps track their own happiness separately. You can have a content camp and a colony sliding toward mutiny at the same time, which is why it is worth checking the colony-level number rather than assuming things are fine because a camp looks healthy.

Does the Gibbet have a downside?#

Mechanically it hands you +5 cohesion for imprisoning a drifter. Narratively it is the game letting you scapegoat someone rather than solve the problem — which is the point. Treat it as an emergency lever rather than part of your normal economy.

Should I keep cohesion at 100% all the time?#

No. Above the ~70% band you already have the efficiency bonus, and cohesion above that is a buffer you are meant to spend on risky choices. Sitting at maximum and always taking the safe option means you are playing more conservatively than the game requires.
