Halo: Campaign Evolved

Halo: Campaign Evolved skulls: all 42, what they do, and which mission each is in

Campaign Evolved has 42 skulls — far more than the Anniversary release, and organised differently. 26 are legacy skulls returning from earlier Halo games; 16 are new to this release. Locations have moved, because both the skull count and the level layouts changed.

The other thing that changed: a lot of these skulls make the game easier, not harder. In previous Halo games a skull was a self-imposed handicap. Here, modifiers like Bandana (infinite ammo) and Endurance Spec (invulnerable UNSC vehicles) exist to let you mess about. That reframes how you should use them.

How to find skulls#

There is no waypoint and no collectible counter on the map. The only in-world cue is audio: get within range of a skull and you will hear a whispering, hissing sound that grows louder the closer you get.

Practical consequences:

Which mission holds which skull#

Three per mission, in campaign order.

The 16 new skulls and what they do#

These are exclusive to Campaign Evolved. Several are genuinely useful rather than punishing.

SkullEffect
AdaptationRandomises which enemy factions appear in the mission
ArmisticeEnemy factions never fight each other
EfficientEnemies drop more ammo when you are at full health
Endurance SpecUNSC vehicles cannot be damaged
Floor Is LavaYou take continuous damage whenever you touch the ground
Give & TakeFiring drains your shields; hitting enemies recharges them
Hip FireAll weapon zoom is disabled
Johnny Ammo SeedReloading discards the ammo left in the magazine
LeadheadHeadshots no longer deal extra damage or kill instantly
MagnifiedThe assault rifle holds 60-round magazines
PerspectiveSwitches the camera to third person
PopShooting Flood in their weak point makes them explode
ReloadRandomises the pre-placed weapons in the mission
Speed LimitDisables sprint
Stowed ReloadWeapons reload while stowed
TemperamentalAllies turn on you faster if you kill a friendly

Perspective deserves a specific mention: a third-person camera in a Halo campaign is the biggest change to how the game feels on this entire list, and it is not a difficulty modifier at all. Worth grabbing early just to try it.

The 17 skulls LASO actually needs#

This is the part most people get wrong. LASO does not require all 42. Because many skulls now make the game easier, only a curated set of 17 counts:

Black Eye · Boom · Eye Patch · Famine · Fog · Grunt Birthday Party · Grunt Funeral · Iron · IWHBYD · Johnny Ammo Seed · Malfunction · Mythic · Pop · Speed Limit · Temperamental · That's Just… Wrong · Thunderstorm

Read that list and the difficulty becomes obvious: Iron restarts the whole level when you die solo, Black Eye makes meleeing something your only shield recharge, Famine halves your ammo supply, and Mythic plus Thunderstorm raise both enemy health and enemy ranks. Speed Limit takes away sprint on top of all that.

An efficient collection route#

  1. Play the campaign once for the story, on whatever difficulty you enjoy. Do not hunt.
  2. Collect on a second pass, mission by mission, on Easy. Skull placement is not difficulty-gated, so fighting harder enemies buys you nothing on a collectible sweep.
  3. Grab any two skulls early — that alone unlocks Adaptation, Reload and Armistice, plus Campaign Remix and the visual modifiers.
  4. Do Operation: METEORITE last. Nine of the 39 live in those three bonus missions, so it is the densest stretch, and you will have learned to trust the audio cue by then.
  5. Then start LASO, with the 17 required skulls already in hand.

Campaign Remix and the visual modifiers#

Finding two skulls also unlocks Campaign Remix, along with three visual modes:

The visual modifiers only work inside Campaign Remix, not in a normal campaign run.

FAQ#

How many skulls are in Halo: Campaign Evolved?#

42 in total — 26 legacy skulls from earlier Halo games and 16 new to this release. Only 39 are collected in missions; Adaptation, Reload and Armistice unlock automatically once you have found a couple of others.

Do I need to play on Legendary to get skulls?#

No. Skull placement is not difficulty-gated, so a collectible run on Easy yields exactly the same skulls as one on Legendary. Save Legendary for the LASO attempt afterwards.

Can I collect skulls in co-op?#

Campaign co-op is supported, and a collectible sweep goes faster with a second player covering ground. Be aware that in this series progress and achievement credit have historically favoured the host, so if you both want the unlocks, run it twice with the hosting swapped.

Why can't I find a skull that a guide says is right here?#

Almost certainly because the guide is for Combat Evolved Anniversary. Campaign Evolved rebuilt the levels and raised the skull count, so 2011 placements do not transfer. Use the audio cue rather than a 15-year-old screenshot.

Do skulls disable achievements?#

No — the opposite. Several achievements in this release specifically require playing with skulls active, and LASO is built entirely around them. Turning skulls on is intended progression, not a cheat.
