Palworld

Palworld: Victor and Shadowbeak disappearing after you catch them

A Pal you definitely caught not being in your box is one of the worst bugs a creature-collection game can have, because the reward was the whole activity. The good news: most cases have a mundane explanation, and a few of them are recoverable.

Work through this in order — the boring causes are also the most common.

First, rule out the boring explanations#

Genuinely check all four. A large share of "disappeared Pal" reports end here.

1. Is it in the Pal box rather than your party? Boss captures frequently go straight to storage when your party is full. Open the box and search by name rather than scrolling — the box sorts in ways that make a single entry easy to miss.

2. Are you looking at the right base? The Pal box is per-base in some configurations. A Pal stored at one base does not appear in the list at another.

3. Did the capture actually succeed? A sphere that visibly closes and then breaks is a failed capture. In a chaotic boss fight, with a partner also throwing spheres, it is easy to remember the throw and not the result.

4. In co-op, did someone else get it? Only one player gets the capture. If your partner threw at the same moment, check their box before assuming a bug.

Fix 1 — Reload properly#

Box contents are read from your player save. A desynced client can show a stale box.

  1. Save and fully quit to desktop — not to the main menu. The process must exit.
  2. Relaunch and load in.
  3. Check the box again, at your main base.

In co-op, have the host restart the world rather than just having yourself rejoin. The box state you are shown comes from the world session, so a client-only reconnect can hand you the same stale data.

Fix 2 — Check whether it is deployed, not missing#

Pals assigned to work at a base do not appear in the box list — they are in the world. This catches people constantly with boss Pals, because the game may auto-assign a newly caught Pal if there is a work slot open.

Walk your bases and look. A large flying Pal assigned to a base can be standing on a roof or pathing behind a structure where you would not think to look. Use the base's Pal management screen rather than trusting a visual sweep.

Fix 3 — Check for a full box#

If your Pal box was at capacity when the capture resolved, the game may have had nowhere to put it. Behaviour varies: some captures fail outright, some overflow into a pending state that a reload clears, and some are simply lost.

Free up substantial box space — not one slot, plenty — before any boss attempt. This is the single most effective preventive measure on this page.

Fix 4 — Restore a backup#

If the Pal is genuinely gone and it mattered, a backup restore is the only reliable recovery. You lose the playtime since the backup and you get the Pal fight back.

Full procedure, including where the save folder lives on each platform, is in the First Islander softlock guide — the backup and restore steps are identical for any Palworld problem.

Fix 5 — Just fight it again#

Unglamorous, and frequently the correct call. Field bosses and alpha Pals respawn on a timer. If the alternative is rolling back several hours of progress to recover one Pal you can re-catch in twenty minutes, re-catching is the better trade.

Before the rematch:

Preventing it next time#

  1. Save before every boss attempt, and again immediately after a successful capture.
  2. Keep 20+ free box slots before boss hunting.
  3. Never alt-F4 immediately after a capture. The capture writes to your player file; an unclean exit in that window is the most reliable way to lose it.
  4. In co-op, agree who is throwing. It halves the failed-capture rate and removes all ambiguity about where a Pal went.
  5. After a patch, verify a boss capture works on a save you do not mind losing before committing to a rare target.

FAQ#

Do boss Pals respawn in Palworld?#

Field bosses and alphas respawn on a timer, so a lost capture is recoverable through play rather than through file recovery. That is usually a better use of your evening than rolling back a save.

Why did it show the capture animation and then not appear?#

The most common causes are a full Pal box, a co-op partner registering the capture, or an unclean exit before the player file was written. Check the Paldeck first — it tells you whether the game ever recorded the capture at all.

Can a patch bring back a Pal I lost?#

No. Patches prevent future occurrences; they do not reconstruct data that was never written to your save. The only route back is a backup or a re-catch.

Does this happen more in multiplayer?#

Yes, noticeably. Every additional player adds a chance of a simultaneous capture, a desynced box view, or a disconnect landing in the window between the capture and the save. If you are hunting something rare, solo is more reliable.

Is it safe to use a save editor to add the Pal back?#

It is possible and it is risky. An editor writes fields the game may validate differently after the next patch, and a mistake corrupts the save. If you try it, work on a copy and keep an untouched original — and understand that a re-catch carries none of that risk.
