Corsair Cove pirate camps: how radius works and when to found a second one
Pirate Camps are how you claim territory on Corsair Cove's vertical islands. Each camp defines housing and services for the pirates near it, within a limited radius — and that radius is the thing most players do not respect until it has already cost them a run.
Radius is the whole mechanic#
A camp is not a decorative boundary. Pirates assigned to a camp draw their housing and services from what sits inside that camp's radius.
The failure this produces is subtle, because nothing breaks visibly:
You build a Galley on a lovely ledge. It works. It produces stew. Your pirates on the other ledge, assigned to a different camp, stay hungry — because a distant Galley on the wrong ledge does not serve them.
There is no error message for this. Production looks healthy, satisfaction slides, and cohesion follows it down. If a camp's needs are red while your totals look fine, you have a radius problem, not a supply problem.
When to found a second camp#
Two conditions, and you want both:
1. Your first camp is genuinely stable. Green food, green drink, green housing. Not "probably fine" — the wiki phrasing that matches reality is that stew delivery should be boringly stable before you expand.
2. You actually need the reach. Either a Pier slot you cannot otherwise get, or resource deposits the original radius cannot cover. Expanding for the sake of expanding is what turns one healthy settlement into two struggling ones.
Placing a second camp well#
Avoid heavy overlap. Two camps covering mostly the same ground wastes the founding cost and gains you nothing. You paid for reach; use it.
Light overlap is good. A little shared area — enough for both camps to reach a common warehouse — is worth having. Full separation means duplicating storage.
Put it near a second Pier. A satellite camp beside another pier stops drifters hiking the entire width of the island for every plank. On a vertical map, that walk is far more expensive than the flat distance suggests.
Build the service buildings before the people arrive. Housing, a Galley for stew, and a Tavern for booze delivery — inside the new radius — then assign pirates. Not the other way round.
A safe expansion sequence#
- Confirm camp one is green on food, drink and housing, and has been for a while
- Found the new camp where you actually need reach — pier slot or deposits
- Build housing inside the new radius
- Build the Galley chain, and confirm stew is arriving locally
- Build the Tavern, so booze reaches the new camp — production is not delivery
- Confirm a warehouse is reachable from both camps
- Only now assign pirates
- Watch cohesion for a few minutes before adding more
Steps 3 to 5 are the ones people skip because founding the camp feels like the milestone. The camp is not the milestone; the first satisfied pirate living in it is.
Camps and the Technology Compass#
Expansion is the Empire direction on the Technology Compass — deeds and unlocks aimed at running more than one settlement.
That means a second camp is a strategic commitment, not just a build. Points spent on Empire are points not spent on Wealth logistics or Notoriety morale tools, both of which make your first camp better. If your existing camp still has red fetcher routes, fixing those beats founding another one.
FAQ#
What does a pirate camp actually do in Corsair Cove?#
It claims territory and defines housing and services for pirates assigned to it, within a limited radius. Pirates draw what they need from inside that radius — buildings outside it do not serve them, even though they keep functioning.
When should I build a second camp?#
Once your first camp has stable green food, drink and housing, and you need reach the original radius cannot give you — a Pier slot or resource deposits further out. Expanding before that splits a working economy into two failing ones.
Why are my pirates unhappy when I have plenty of food?#
Almost always radius. A Galley on the wrong ledge produces stew that never reaches the camp your pirates are assigned to. Check which camp is red rather than looking at your island-wide totals.
Can camp radii overlap?#
Light overlap is fine and often useful, typically so both camps can reach a shared warehouse. Heavy overlap wastes the founding cost, because you are paying for reach you already had.
Does a second camp need its own Galley and Tavern?#
Yes — services are per-radius. Build housing, stew and booze delivery inside the new camp before assigning anyone to it, or you are creating unsatisfied pirates on day one.
