Nioh 3 Hell Rising: why Takechiyo travels to Edo in 1651

Hell Rising sends Takechiyo forward through time to Edo in 1651, during the Keian era. In this timeline, the future Takechiyo is dead, the expected peace has collapsed and the Crucible has turned the castle town into a hellish wasteland.

The confirmed story setup#

An unknown yokai first encountered in a dream leads Takechiyo into the future. Edo is occupied by yokai, human rebels and foreign alchemists, and the plot again revolves around Spirit Stones and hostility toward the shogunate. Team NINJA names the one-eyed swordsman Yagyu Jubei and Spanish envoy Rodrigo as important characters.

That is the safe, spoiler-light summary. The developer has not revealed every mission or outcome, so claims about a final boss, route order or ending should be treated as speculation until the DLC is playable.

What the new stage adds#

The official page confirms the new Edo stage, new enemies, equipment and Soul Cores. It also adds Hoko & Shield and Ninja Hoko & Shield, new Guardian Spirits, skills, Martial Arts, Ninjutsu, Onmyo Magic and Graces.

Read the Hoko and Shield guide before choosing a style. If you are preparing an endgame character, the Enlightened One's Journey guide explains the new difficulty, while the Nioh 3 guide hub collects future access updates.
