Mistfall Hunter
Mistfall Hunter classes: all six explained, and which one to actually start on
Mistfall Hunter has six classes: Mercenary, Withered Knight, Blackarrow, Shadowstrix, Sorcerer and Seer. Picking one matters more here than in a normal action RPG, because this is an extraction game — the class that wins the most fights is not automatically the class that gets the most loot home.
What a "class" actually decides#
A build in Mistfall Hunter is four things stacked together:
- Your class — the fixed part, and the reason this page exists.
- The weapon branch you bring into a run — most classes have more than one, and they play very differently.
- The talents you pick while levelling inside that run.
- The affixes rolled on the gear you actually extracted with.
Only the first is locked. That matters because it means a class is not a build — two Mercenaries with different weapon branches and affixes barely resemble each other.
The six classes#
Mercenary — the one to start on#
Role: versatile melee frontliner. Weapons: warhammer, or sword and shield.
The Mercenary has the highest health pool in the game plus real damage reduction, which in an extraction game is worth more than it sounds: the tax on a mistake is your entire loadout, and this is the class most likely to survive one. Sword-and-shield in particular has forgiving parry timings, which is the single most useful thing a new player can have.
Strengths: highest HP, strong damage reduction, crowd control, decent mobility. Weaknesses: almost no ranged answer, slower than the rest, low single-target damage — it struggles against bosses specifically.
Rated top-tier for solo play and merely good in groups, which is exactly backwards from what most people assume about a "tank".
Withered Knight — highest ceiling in a straight fight#
Role: heavy damage with debuff application. Weapons: two-handed sword, including ranged slashes.
Applies the Wither debuff and builds around it. Fast combos, strong engage tools, and parry and counter abilities that reward you for learning one moveset deeply.
Strengths: high damage, excellent PvE and PvP performance, strong openers. Weaknesses: locked to a single weapon type, so it gets repetitive; genuinely vulnerable to ranged attackers who refuse to close.
Excellent solo, weak in organised groups — its tools are all self-sufficient, which is wasted when a squad already covers those roles.
Blackarrow — highest ranged damage, lowest margin for error#
Role: ranged specialist. Weapons: elemental arrows and traps.
The best pure ranged damage in the game, plus status effects — bleed, poison, stun — and traps that reward reading a map before a fight starts. Terrain is a real weapon for this class.
Strengths: top ranged damage, versatile status effects, huge advantage from good positioning. Weaknesses: very squishy, badly punished by crowd control, near-helpless once something is in your face.
Best-in-slot for trios. Noticeably weaker in PvP, where opponents actively hunt the archer.
Shadowstrix — choose your engagements#
Role: stealth assassin. Weapons: fast melee built around combo execution.
Invisibility plus burst damage. The highest single-target damage in the game and extreme mobility, which in extraction terms means you decide which fights happen at all.
Strengths: highest single-target burst, best mobility, stealth control over engagements. Weaknesses: the squishiest class, punished hardest for a mistimed combo, and vulnerable to anything that counters stealth.
Consistently strong across solo, squad and PvP rather than dominant in one — the most flexible pick on this list.
Sorcerer — big damage, steep learning curve#
Role: elemental and astral damage caster.
Massive damage potential and strong crowd control. It is not on the recommended-for-beginners list, and that is a fair call — casters in extraction games live or die on positioning and cooldown discipline, neither of which you have on day one.
Seer — the reason squads want you#
Role: support hybrid. Weapons: totems, runes and sigils.
Healing, debuff application and battlefield control through life-and-death magic. Also not a beginner recommendation, for a different reason: a support class only shows its value when the people around you are good enough to use it.
Solo versus squad, honestly#
| Class | Solo | Squad | Beginner-friendly |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mercenary | Excellent | Good | Yes — best starting pick |
| Withered Knight | Excellent | Weak | Yes |
| Shadowstrix | Strong | Strong | Reasonably |
| Blackarrow | Good | Excellent | Moderately |
| Sorcerer | Demanding | Strong | No |
| Seer | Weak alone | Excellent | No |
The current meta trio is Withered Knight frontline + Blackarrow damage + Seer support — but note that Withered Knight is rated weak in groups generally. That is not a contradiction; it means the trio works because the Seer covers exactly the sustain gap that normally makes Withered Knight a poor group pick.
Picking for extraction, not for combat#
The mistake that costs new players the most gear is choosing a class on damage numbers.
In a game where the run only counts if you walk out, the value of a class is roughly:
(how often it wins fights it chooses) + (how often it escapes fights it did not choose)
That second term is why Shadowstrix and Mercenary over-perform relative to their damage, and why Blackarrow — which has the best damage in the game at range — is a nervous solo pick. A class with no disengage is a class that eventually loses its loadout.
FAQ#
What is the best class for beginners in Mistfall Hunter?#
Mercenary. It has the largest health pool, meaningful damage reduction and the most forgiving parry window in sword-and-shield configuration — which means your early mistakes cost you health instead of your entire run. Withered Knight, Blackarrow and Shadowstrix are also reasonable starts; Sorcerer and Seer are not.
What is the best solo class?#
Mercenary and Withered Knight rate highest for solo play. Mercenary survives errors; Withered Knight ends fights before errors matter. Shadowstrix is the third option and the most flexible if you would rather avoid fights than win them.
Can I change class later?#
Classes are per-character, so switching means levelling a new one. That is the normal path — most players end up with a solo character and a squad character rather than one universal build.
Does class matter more than gear?#
Early on, yes — class determines whether you can disengage, and disengaging is what protects gear. Later, the gap narrows, because affixes on extracted gear and your talent picks within a run carry more of your power than the class baseline does.
Which class is best in PvP?#
Withered Knight rates highest, with Shadowstrix close behind. Blackarrow drops noticeably in PvP compared with PvE, because human opponents specifically hunt the archer rather than letting them hold a firing line.
