Stalker 2 Cost of Hope: choosing between Duty and Freedom

Cost of Hope is built around the collapsing peace between Duty and Freedom, and Skif must choose between their beliefs. Duty wants the Zone contained and destroyed; Freedom wants its secrets studied and made available rather than suppressed.

Which faction should you choose?#

There is no verified “best” choice before the expansion launches. GSC describes Cost of Hope as nonlinear and says Skif's decisions can affect the Zone and consequences beyond it. Choose by role-play on a first run, but keep a manual save before the commitment point if you want to compare outcomes.

FactionCore positionLikely fit
DutyThe Zone is a threat to contain and destroyPlayers who prioritize order and control
FreedomThe Zone should be explored and its knowledge sharedPlayers who prioritize access and discovery

The table summarizes confirmed ideology, not rewards. No official source currently proves that either route gives superior weapons, ending rewards or access to more content.

What is confirmed#

The expansion adds a large storyline, two new regions, characters, weapons, gear, mutants and anomalies. It starts through a PDA signal during the main campaign and launches August 20, 2026.

Before committing, see whether you can use an existing Cost of Hope save and visit the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 guide hub for release and region updates.
