S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2

Do you need a new save for Stalker 2: Cost of Hope?

No mandatory new save has been announced for Cost of Hope. GSC Game World says that after installing the expansion, you receive a PDA signal during the main campaign that starts its storyline. That wording supports continuing an existing compatible save, although the studio also says some progression is required.

How to prepare your save#

  1. Keep one manual save from before starting the expansion.
  2. Update the base game and confirm the DLC is installed on the same account.
  3. Load a campaign save and watch the PDA for the expansion signal.
  4. Do not overwrite your only pre-DLC save after making major faction choices.

GSC has not yet published the exact mission, location or progress threshold for the signal. Avoid guides claiming a precise trigger unless they show the live build or cite an updated support page.

Why an existing save makes sense#

Cost of Hope runs parallel to the base-game story and keeps Skif as protagonist. It adds two regions, including the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant, and centers on choices involving Duty and Freedom. That structure is designed to connect to campaign progression rather than replace it.

For the faction setup, read Duty or Freedom in Cost of Hope. You can also use the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 guide hub for release and Update 2.0 coverage.
